Charles Ogletree '87, the Harvard Law School Jesse Climenko Professorof Law, and Founding and Executive Director of the Charles Hamilton Houston Institute for Race and Justice, is a prominent legal theorist who has made an international reputation by taking a hard look at complex issues of law and by working to secure the rights guaranteed by the Constitution for everyone equally under the law. The Charles Hamilton Houston Institute for Race and Justice (http://www.charleshamiltonhouston.org), named in honor of the visionary lawyer who spearheaded the litigation in Brown v. Come out and volunteer with other Harvard Law alumni in the Chicago area on February 24, 2010 at 5:30 pm at the law offices of Jenner & Block, 353 N. Clark Street, Chicago. Volunteers will discuss their journey to Harvard and life after Harvard with approximately 60 high school students involved with the Just the Beginning Foundation in either a round table or panel format. Food and drink will be provided.

"Just the Beginning" began as a celebration of the Integration of the Federal Judiciary on September 19, 1992, in Chicago, IL. The celebratory event entitled, "Just The Beginning - A Celebration of Integration of the Federal Judiciary" honored Judge James Parsons, the first African-American United States District Court Judge, on his retirement after devoting thirty-one years on the federal bench. At that celebration and for the first time in history, fifty-two African-American federal judges and hundreds of African American lawyers from across the country gathered to celebrate the history, struggles, and accomplishments of African-Americans in the law. Inspired by the events of that weekend, Just the Beginning Foundation was founded as a not-for-profit organization of judges, lawyers, and other citizens who are dedicated to improving the legal system, preserving the history and honoring the legacy of African-Americans in the federal judiciary. Today, Just the Beginning Foundation continues this mission by offering pipeline programs directly aimed at inspiring young students and increasing diversity in the legal profession and judiciary.

In a conflict with an adversary that one perceives as “evil,” should one negotiate or not? This issue arises often in foreign policy, such as the United States’ recent reconsideration of new approaches to relations with Iran, Cuba, and North Korea. Some experts claim that to bargain with the “enemy” risks rewarding unworthy behavior. Others say one should always be willing to negotiate because it is only through compromise that one can build peace and minimize the costs in blood and treasure of war. Please join The Chicago Council on Global Affairs for a special program on the art of negotiation with Robert H. Mnookin, who will explore the challenge of making decisions
about when to negotiate – and when to refuse.

Robert H. Mnookin is the Samuel Williston Professor of Law at Harvard Law School, the chair of the Program on Negotiation at Harvard Law School, and the director of the Harvard Negotiation Research Project. Before joining the Harvard faculty, Mnookin was the Adelbert H. Sweet Professor of Law at Stanford Law School and director of the Stanford Center on Conflict and Negotiation, an interdisciplinary group concerned with overcoming barriers to the negotiated resolution of conflict. A leading scholar in the field of conflict resolution, Mnookin has applied his interdisciplinary approach to negotiation and conflict resolution to a range of problems, both public and private. Mnookin has taught numerous workshops for corporations, governmental agencies and law firms throughout the world, and trained many executives and professionals in negotiation and mediation skills. He received his A.B. in Economics from Harvard College and his LL.B. from Harvard Law School.

His latest book, "Bargaining with the Devil," will be available for purchase and signing after the program.

About Gordon P. Wright (HLS '95):
Gordon P. Wright is the Chief Executive Officer and Founder of Grant Park Capital Partners, LLC, a Chicago-based hedge fund-of-funds. Grant Park Capital's initial product offering is a "concentrated blue-chip" fund, specifically designed to address the current market dislocation and resulting flight to quality in the hedge fund space. Grant Park Capital hopes to launch its initial product offering early second quarter 2009.

Prior to founding Grant Park Capital, Gordon spent nine years with UBS O'Connor, LLC, Chicago, Illinois, where he served as Senior Research Analyst on the Event Driven Trading team. The Event Driven Trading portfolio consisted primarily of classic merger arbitrage situations, leveraged recaps and leveraged buyouts. During his tenure as the team's second most senior member, Gordon's leadership and analytical contributions were instrumental in growing Event Driven Trading assets under management (AUM) from less than two hundred million to over one billion dollars.

HLS Considers Change to Recruiting Schedule

This week HLS's Associate Dean for Career Services Mark Weber announced that he will be advocating that Harvard move to an early on-campus interview program starting in August of 2009. Weber's memo sent to students on December 2, 2008 states,

While our later program provided several benefits,some students participating in OCI this fall were adversely impacted by our start date because of the economic meltdown that occurred in September ... Of course firms still wanted to hire students from Harvard- but felt they could not hire as many
because of the adverse economic conditions.

About Jack S. Levin Jack S. Levin graduated summa cum laude, first in his class, from Harvard Law School in 1961, where he served as an officer of the Harvard Law Review. For many years Jack has taught courses on structuring private equity/venture capital transactions at both Harvard and University of Chicago Law Schools, indoctrinating thousands of young minds in the devious art of combining complex business, legal, tax, and accounting concepts. He is the author of an enthralling 1,400 page book on structuring venture capital/private equity transactions and co-author of an exciting 4-volume, 4,600-page treatise on mergers, acquisitions, and buyouts, all of which are updated and republished every 6 to 12 months, a frequent speaker at major tax and private equity conferences, mainly in warm climates, and author or co-author of more than 50 inspiring articles and book chapters on tax and private equity topics, although to the best of anyone's knowledge no one has ever read any of them. Jack is a CPA and winner of the Illinois gold medal on the CPA exam. In May 2005, Jack received the Chambers & Partners' global attorney lifetime achievement award for pioneering legal work in private equity/venture capital, presented in London by U.K. Prime Minister Tony Blair's spouse.
